I chose this name myself, carefully studying the balance between the Chinese characters, the significance of the individual
characters, the authenticity of the name in a Chinese context and the whole as such — my new name —
Mei Ai Bing has several possible interpretations. The characters individually read:
"The flower of the Plum Tree" "Loves" "Ice"
First reading; "Strength from the Cold North". The flower of the Plum Tree can withstand frost showing strength and beauty combined. Love itself is an ever
popular character and name in China. While Ice hints at the Nordic winter of my origin.
Second reading; "Poetry and romance". Mei Ai Bing is a true — but not common — Chinese name. It is also the name of a Chinese poem. Its poetic and romantic
flavor — enforced by "Mei" — could suggest that the name belongs to a women.
Third reading; Rewriting my Danish surname Mellbin. Thus, the individual sounds put together are quite close to the pronunciation of my surname in Danish.
The balance between the characters is also important in Chinese. This aspect was considered by selecting three relatively heavy and complicated characters. Here the
number of strokes needed is a decisive factor.
