Out trip to Yunnan Province in November 1998 was a real treat with Lijiang and Zhongdian as the main points of interest. This is a very popular area amongst backpackers. However, most seem to stay in the Dali/Lijiang area, whereas it is further to the North towards Lijiang/Zhongdina/Deqi that the landscape and the people are by far the most interesting. Here you can visit the original Shangri-la. This relatively isolated corner of China will be opened to many more tourists when the airport in Deqi opens in 1999.
