Me and my Tornado

The Eye of the Tornado

The Tornado took me over a week to develop. On the last day I completed the lightning bolts and programed the RCX. The hard part was to make the Tornado spin. First I tried to build a motor  directly on the Tornado. But I failed because the Tornado was too heavy for the motor to make the tornado spin.

The Tornado can make sounds, shoot and spin at the same time. It took some time to program it because me and my father did not know how to use some of the control commands correctly. If the Tornado would turn the same way around all the time the power cords from the RCX would have broken comletely. So in stead after about six rounds it turned back the other way.

I made this tower to support the eight fibre optics as lightning bolts. The red motor I have used in the picture came from the Space Shuttle set. Probably the biggest Lego Technic set ever.

Here you can see how the gun shoot the debris using a spring. The blue thing at the bottom is a rotation sensor. To turn the Tornado around I used a worm gear.

This is how I positioned the fibre optics.

The three small pieces lying on the white surface is some kind of debris that my father created. When the Tornado spun the debris came flying out of a gun.
